Who can apply for the campus jobs?
International students with a valid F-1 or J-1 visa who are enrolled full-time can work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week during the academic year. They can also work up to 40 hours per week during school breaks, such as Thanksgiving break (1 week), winter break(2-3 weeks), spring break (1 week), and summer (4 months). This rule also applies to supported students who receive financial support from their department. There are also official guidelines released and updated by MTU from time to time such as the Student Employment Guide that provides information on the kinds of forms to be filled out by the employee, the responsibilities of the employer (either the respective department or administrative office), and provides links to other allied resources.
What about off-campus jobs?
International students with a F-1 or J-1 visa are typically not allowed to seek off-campus employment. Please review the specific terms of your visa or contact IPS for more information.
Where to find them ?
- Most campus jobs are posted on Handshake. Some individual departments may also have job postings on their web pages, such as Facilities Management, Administration, and Auxiliary Management.
- There is a mailing list that you can subscribe to get informed on new job openings.
- Google services also does a great job compiling available jobs from different websites into one neat list. For example, if you Google ‘MTU on campus jobs’ you should find a helpful list about available jobs.
- The Career Services office at Michigan Technological University offers job search assistance and advice to students. They can help you find technology-related jobs on campus or in the surrounding area.
What are the different on-campus jobs?
There are different types of on-campus jobs excluding TA or RA duties. Some campus job types are listed below along with relevant webpages(if available at the time of compilation). They are categorized based on the place of work.
- Dining Services
- Dining Services Workers help prepare and serve food in the university’s dining halls and cafes.
- Concession student workers are responsible for preparing and serving food and beverages to customers. This includes handling food, following food safety regulations, and maintaining a clean and sanitary work environment.
- Office Assistant
- Office Assistants provide administrative support to various departments and offices on campus. These are categorized as under Human Resource
- Recreation
- Student Development Complex Attendants: Help maintain and operate the university’s fitness facilities
- Student Instructors: Student instructors are responsible for teaching skiing or snowboarding classes in Mont Ripley
- Intramural Sports: Help carry out the intramural competitions, including set-up, refereeing and scheduling
- Transportation Services
- Help out with parking enforcement
- Grounds Department
- Ground assistant responsibilities include lawn and garden care, moving furniture, trash and recycling collection, and similar work
- Resident hall custodian
- Custodian responsibilities can include the following
- Cleaning and maintenance of residence halls

- Assisting with move-in and move-out
- Overall, the role of a Residence Hall Custodian during the summer break is to ensure that the residence halls are clean, safe, and well-maintained for the next academic year.

- IT Help Desk Assistants provide technical support to students, faculty, and staff with computer and software issues.
- Summer Youth Program
- Summer job opportunity for college students to teach school going students from grades 6 – 11 about sustainability through class work and field trips. The program runs from June to August for 8 – 10 weeks duration.

Some tips from campus job-employed students:
- Students looking for on-campus jobs should try and keep an eye on Handshake as jobs open up constantly (especially on campus)
- On-campus jobs can be competitive, so it’s a good idea to start your job search early. Check the job postings on the university website regularly and apply to positions as soon as they become available.
- Don’t shy away from reaching out to staff members about available jobs directly
- Talk to your seniors and other students who have jobs on campus or have prior experience (many students go away for internships and their spots open up!)
- Have a resume and cover letter in hand as applying for the jobs require these documents
- Follow the university’s social media accounts: Michigan Technological University may post about job openings and other opportunities on their social media accounts, such as Twitter and Facebook.
