There are various ways to get around the Houghton/Hancock area. Most destinations are within walking distance, but if you need additional transportation GSG has compiled a list of options for you.

Shuttle Services

During the Fall and Spring semesters, the MTU Transportation Services provide shuttle service around campus and throughout downtown Houghton. During the Summer, the Shuttle Services are also available. There are two different types of shuttle:

  • The Husky Campus Shuttle, accessible to students, faculty and staff with a valid HuskyCard.
  • The City Commuter Shuttle, accessible to students, faculty, staff and guests.

All shuttles are equipped with GPS units to provide the current location of each shuttle along its route. Taxi Services & Lift
To this day, we know of one active taxi company in the area: Copper Country Limo and Taxi. You can check out their website (Copper Country Limo Taxi) or their Facebook page (click here) for further information on their services.

A few Lyft drivers are also active in the Houghton and Hancock area–check out Lyft.com to find a ride.

Houghton Public Transit
The Houghton Public Transit is a City operated bus system for residents and visitors of Houghton. You can purchase punchcards from any transit driver or at the City of Houghton offices. The Public Transit bus system has an on-demand pick up service: you need to call at 906-482-6092 to arrange a ride. Expect to be charged $3 to $6 for a ride–typically $3 if you’re a student and your destination is within the city limits.

Note: Hancock has a Public Transit bus system too! On demand service only, Monday through Friday, 9.00 am to 5.00 pm. Check out the City of Hancock Public Transit page for further information.

Western U.P. transit

Motorist Assistance
“Need air in a tire? Need a battery boost? Did you run out of gas? Contact our office at 906-487-1441 during normal business hours and we will be happy to provide assistance at no charge. Our staff can also help you contact the appropriate services for other vehicle problems outside of the services we provide. After normal business hours, please contact the Department of Public Safety and Police Services at 906-487-2216.
